How does rooming work?

Adventure trips

All our Adventure trips are priced on the basis of sharing a twin room, and around 75% of Flashpackers choose to do so. It’s one of the fastest ways to connect with your fellow travellers – and even the most apprehensive first-timers often tell us they’re glad they gave it a go.

That said, we understand sharing isn’t for everyone. Most adventures offer the option to upgrade to a single room for an additional cost. These are limited in number and tend to fill up quickly, so we recommend booking early to avoid missing out. You can do this at checkout if there’s availability, or request a single room if you’ve already booked.

If a single room is a must for you, and you can’t add one at checkout, please contact our Travel Expert team to see if it’s possible to secure one for you. If you book and then request this later on, you will be subject to our standard terms and conditions and cancellation policy in the event we’re unable to confirm your request.

Wellbeing journeys

Rooming on our Wellbeing journeys works slightly differently, as some retreats offer multiple room categories (for example, different room types, sizes or views).

You can choose your preferred room category when booking, and if you select a shared option, you’ll be paired with another Flashpacker of the same passport gender who has selected the same room category.

Single rooms may also be available in certain categories for an additional cost, depending on the retreat. Availability is limited, so we recommend checking the trip page for full details and booking early to secure your preferred option.

How are roommates matched?

We put a lot of care into this. From the moment you book, we begin getting to know you – starting with your answers to our Personalisation & Rooming questionnaire that’s part of our onboarding checklist. This includes details about your sleep preferences, habits and general likes and dislikes. We use this to pair you with a like-minded Flashpacker of the same passport gender.

Roommates are revealed at check-in, and while we’re pretty great at what we do – with an average score of 8.6/10 for our rooming matches over the past year – we know it’s not an exact science. That’s why we keep things flexible. If you’d like to switch roommates after the first night or two, you’re very welcome to do so, as long as it’s handled respectfully and with everyone’s agreement.

Please note for our Wellbeing trips, room matching will be more limited on some of these journeys due to the different room categories available. That said, many guests still choose to share, and everyone joining these trips tends to be travelling for similar reasons – to reset, reconnect and experience something meaningful. It’s a like-minded crowd.

If I don't pay for a single room, will I always have a roommate?

Usually, yes. But now and then, group numbers don’t divide perfectly – which means a Flashpacker might end up in a twin room alone for part (or all) of the trip.

In most of these cases, around 10 days before your trip starts, we’ll run a blind auction via the WhatsApp group to offer Flashpackers the opportunity to bid for this single occupancy upgrade. We’ll share full details at the time, including the minimum starting bid.

If no one opts for this and we don’t receive any last-minute bookings, one Flashpacker will be placed in a twin room alone, based on the best overall group compatibility. In some cases, this room may be rotated at the Pack Leader’s discretion or with the group’s agreement.

If you’d prefer a guaranteed single room for the whole trip, this must be arranged in advance – we’re unable to make this change once the trip is underway.

Can I book a single room for just some nights?

We’re only able to offer single rooms for the full duration of your trip. That’s because we’d still need to hold your space in the twin room and wouldn’t be able to allocate it to anyone else.

During Adventure trips, if you decide that you’d benefit from a solo night or two, feel free to ask hotels about availability on arrival – some of our Flashpackers choose this route, and as you'd be filling a room last-minute which otherwise is likely to remain empty, you may be offered a competitive rate. Your Pack Leader can also support with these conversations while you’re travelling.
